Formerly operated by General Motors, the Saab 2000 will support Penske Racing's NASCAR operations. Piedmont Hawthorne, the exclusive agent for General Motors' Saab 2000s, is working to sell or lease the company's other two, which are based at GM's facility at Detroit Metro Airport.

BRS, INC. reported sales of $1.7 million for the first six months of its fiscal 2001, a 75.2 percent increase over the six-month period a year earlier. BRS President and CEO Mark Thomas said the company is on track to exceed $3 million in sales for fiscal 2001, a substantial increase over fiscal 2000's record of $2.35 million in revenues. The company said the increase reflects the heightened interest in its emergency parachute system on general aviation aircraft.
Model Hawker 800XP series airplanes and Model Hawker 800 (U-125A military) airplanes (Docket No. 2000-NM-274-AD) - proposes to require a one-time inspection of an attachment bolt in the main landing gear (MLG) door system to determine whether the bolt's protruding threads have been peened; and corrective action, if necessary. This action is necessary to prevent the disconnection of the retaining hook (which holds the MLG door up and locked) from its means of actuation, which could result in a gear-up landing and possible injury to passengers and crew.
A de Havilland Twin Otter turboprop operated by the Interior Department's Office of Aircraft Services was heavily damaged May 1 when the aircraft veered off the runway at Star Parachute Airport in Star, Idaho while attempting to land. The flight had departed from Boise, Idaho with 12 parachutists for smoke jumper training. After the jumpers had parachuted, the pilot was on landing roll when "the nose wheel steering tiller control failed and the aircraft veered off the runway and collided with the terrain" and then struck a cow.
Model Avro 146-RJ series airplanes (Docket No. 2000-NM-211-AD) - proposes to require modification of the passenger service units. This action is necessary to prevent failure of the passenger service units to deliver oxygen to the passengers in the event of decompression of the airplane, which could result in injury to the passengers. GE AIRCRAFT ENGINES awarded a contract to Ametek Aerospace, Paoli, Pa., to provide the engine sensor suite for GE's new CF34-10D/E jet engine. The sensor suite will measure temperatures, pressures, speeds, oil level/temperature and vibration. The contract is the first by GE Aircraft Engines that includes the entire engine sensor package to one supplier, said David Zapico, vice president and general manager of Ametek Aerospace and Power Instruments. The CF34-10 series engine will develop 18,000 pounds of takeoff thrust.

Model 328-300 series airplanes equipped with motive flow check valves having Part Number 106-0007-01 (Docket No. 2001-NM-45-AD; Amendment 39-12209; AD 2001-09-04) - requires repetitive inspections of motive flow check valves and adjacent parts for fuel leaks, and replacement of the valves, if leaks are detected. This action is necessary to prevent leakage of fuel from the motive flow check valves, which could result in fuel vapors coming into contact with fuel ignition sources. The Federal Aviation Administration hopes to release next month a "far-reaching" 10-year National Airspace System Operational Evolution Plan (OEP) to help accommodate projected growth in aircraft traffic, FAA Administrator Jane Garvey told the Senate aviation subcommittee Thursday. The plan - drafted in coordination with the airlines, airports and other segments of the aviation community - will encompass airspace redesign, aircraft operations, new technology, new runway construction and new delay management procedures, she said.
A BELL 407 helicopter was substantially damaged after it lost engine power during a precautionary landing near the Vermillion 44 offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico, but the pilot and two passengers were not injured. The Air Logistics helicopter, N917AL, had departed the High Island 368 offshore platform and was en route to Intracoastal City, La. The pilot told National Transportation Safety Board investigators that during the flight a slight vibration became noticeable. The vibration grew more pronounced and was accompanied by a noise.
The first Bombardier Aerospace Global Express long-range aircraft configured for special mission use achieved a milestone this month when it was handed over to Japanese officials at a ceremony in the United Kingdom. Global Express S/N 9034 was completed at Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge, England, one of four independent Global Express completion facilities. The aircraft now will be turned over to Aerodata of Germany for installation of an automatic flight inspection system (AFIS).

AEROCENTURY CORP. released two de Havilland DHC-6-300 Twin Otter aircraft to Trans Moldavian Airways Private Limited, a regional airline based in Male, Republic of Maldives. The Twin Otters were returned to AeroCentury from Sociedad Aeronautica de Medellin Consolidada, S.A. (SAM), a unit of Colombia's flagship airline AVIANCA. AeroCentury specializes in leasing regional aircraft and engines with commercial users in the U.S., United Kingdom, Europe and South America.

MESABA AIRLINES signed an agreement last month under which Pan Am International Flight Academy (PAIFA) will become the exclusive provider of flight training services for the carrier for an initial 10-year term. The airline and PAIFA will open a new training center in Minneapolis, Minn. to provide all the training requirements for Mesaba's fleet of Saab 340 and Avro RJ85 aircraft. The parties said the multi-million dollar training facility will house Level D simulators, flight training devices and computer-based training programs.
NATIONAL AIR TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATION developed an Airport Community Relations Toolkit workbook as the next step in its American Aviation Access Initiative to raise visibility and preserve access to the nation's general aviation airports. The workbook includes five sections to help aviation businesses maintain good airport community relations: Developing a Community Relations Program, Implementing Community Outreach Elements, Communicating Effectively and Resolving Conflicts, Pulling It All Together - Strategies for Action and Additional Resources.
