From The Archives: Completion Centers' Booming

Considerable styling attention is being paid as fleets are being outfitted with custom interiors, avionics and paint after leaving the factories. 

In this article, published September 24, 1979, we reported how completion centers are experiencing a high volume of business and competitive demands for new design for cabinetry, seats and galleys. But while experiencing an upward turn, this segment of the industry it is not without its challenges. 

"As a result of the boom, the completion and service centers face many of the same problems as the aircraft manufacturers, accented by the highly specialized nature of their operations:

  • Shortage of skilled labor.
  • Lengthening lead times for materials and subsystems.
  • Impact of slippages in certification on production and delivery schedules."
