Avic’s project to produce the Advanced Heavy Lifter (AHL) helicopter should soon be ready to present to the state group’s head office for launch approval, an industry source said.

For the moment, the project for an unusually large helicopter, with a takeoff weight of 38.7 metric tons (85,300 lb.), is near the end of the preliminary design stage, said the source, who is close to the group but gave no precise timing for the decision on proceeding to full-scale development.

Avic’s helicopter subsidiary, Avicopter, displayed a model of the AHL at the China Helicopter Expo, held earlier this month. The model appeared to be unchanged from one shown at the 2017 show, indicating stability in the design. Before 2017 the design changed dramatically.

The project is currently in the hands of the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute. The decision to begin full-scale development should be accompanied by assignment of the AHL to a factory. Avic will have three choices: relatively busy Harbin Aircraft at Harbin, Changhe Aircraft at Zhingdezhen, and a new and underutilized helicopter factory at Tianjin, the home of Avicopter.
