South African Airways completes flight using tobacco biofuel
South African Airways has completed a flight using biofuels from nicotine-free Solaris tobacco plants.
The flight left Johannesburg and arrived at Cape Town with 300 passengers on board, using 6,300 litres of fuel.
"It shows the industry is really changing. Four or five years ago biofuel was seen as futuristic, and today it's here," said Ian Cruickshank, South African Airways, environmental affairs specialist, in an interview with CNN.
Cruickshank said he hopes that the carrier will use 20 million litres of biofuel by the end of next year, with 50% of its fleet using biofuel by 2023.
