South African Airways to cancel code-share with Etihad Airways

South African Airways is to cancel its code-sharing agreement with Etihad Airways as it plans to end direct flights between Johannesburg and Abu Dhabi.

SAA and Etihad signed a route-share deal in 2013 before expanding with additional routes and the daily Johannesburg to Abu Dhabi flight in March 2015.
The carrier will stop operating the Abu Dhabi flight from March 1, after receiving approval from South Africa’s National Treasury.
The route hasn’t performed as expected, and the carrier is ending its code- share agreement with Etihad “due to route-network rationalisation,” said SAA.
SAA is surviving on 14 billion rand (USD895 million) of government debt guarantees.
