Iran Aseman Fokker 100 suffers damage after overshooting Tabriz runway

Iranian aircrash investigators are continuing to look into an incident in Tabriz on Thursday where two passengers were slightly injured after an Iran Aseman Fokker 100 aircraft registration EP-ASL came to a halt in a ditch after overrunning runway 30R.

The aircraft is understood to have received substantial nose damage.

According to a statement from Tabriz Airport, the aircraft overran by some 400m (1,300ft). The twin-jet came to rest nose-down in a channel, impacting the far wall and crushing the radome.

The incident happened as the Fokker twin jet was landing during a thunderstorm and rain in Tabriz around 22:45L (18:15Z) on Thursday and came to a stop in a ditch about 150 meters past the end of paved surface. The airplane was evacuated, the passengers were taken to the terminal about 10 minutes later. Two people received minor injuries.

The aircraft had originated the flight in Tehran.

Meteorological data from the airport at the time confirms thunderstorm activity and rain in the vicinity. The accident led to the airport's implementing a temporary displaced threshold on the reverse-direction runway 12L.

Tabriz's runway 12L/30R is 3556 meters/11800 feet long at an elevation of 4450 feet (1356 meters).
