IATA promotes adoption of carbon emission global offsetting scheme

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is urging African states to adopt a global offsetting scheme for carbon emissions.

IATA is asking for the scheme to be adopted at the 39th tri-annual Assembly of the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal, this year.
The scheme will be proposed as top of the agenda at the summit, which will prove essential to meeting the aviation sector’s goal of carbon neutral growth from 2020.
“The industry has taken steps to reduce CO2 emissions, with representatives from airlines, airports, air traffic management and manufacturing all contributing. New technologies have been developed, alternative fuels have proved themselves to be a viable option and more efficient operating procedures are being established. Collaboratively the industry has exceeded its annual goal of a 1.5% increase in fuel efficiency,” said Michael Gill, Director Aviation Environment.
This is just one measure that the African aviation industry has put in place to combat its climate impact and meet its goals.
