Ghana races to certify airports

Ghana is racing to certify all of its airports by 2017, conforming to the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) requirements.

Ghana Web has reported that the ICAO requires individual Civil Aviation Authorities to certify airports in countries that are signatories to the Chicago Convention.
Kotoka International Airport, Kumasi Airport, Sunyani Airport, and Tamale Airports are the prominent airports under the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority’s (GCAA) control, whereas Takoradi Airport is controlled by the military.
“Ghana is a signatory to the Chicago Convention and under the convention, all states are required to certified their aerodromes. It is also in our GCAA regulations that all aerodromes should be certified. So all we are doing is to comply with our own requirement and ICAO’s requirements,” said Simon Allotey, director general, GCAA.
Kotoka International Airport was the first to be certified by the GCAA, completing the process last month.
The GCAA is now left to certify the Kumasi, Sunyani, and Tamale airports by next year.
