What’s On The Horizon For: Newcastle International Airport

Newcastle International Airport (NCL), based in the northeast of England, says connecting demand to hub airports is one of the biggest unserved opportunities in the UK, if not across Western Europe.

Speaking at Routes Europe 2026 in Rimini, Italy, Chris Ion, Head of Aviation Development at NCL, identified Istanbul, Zurich and Madrid among the airport’s most significant unserved markets.

Data shows that more than 87,500 passengers traveled between Newcastle’s core catchment and Istanbul in 2024 via other airports, with a further 7,200 passengers connecting through already-served gateways.

Zurich generated more than 38,200 passengers of leakage traffic, making NCL the largest unserved market in England, while demand for Madrid exceeded 73,500 passengers, reinforcing its status as one of the airport’s most requested destinations.

Catchment Analysis: Newcastle-Madrid Demand Signals Untapped Potential

“It’s not just about the point-to-point connectivity,” said Ion. “It’s about the onwards journeys that those hubs potentially offer to our customers.”

The airport handled more than 5.6 million passengers in 2025, with growth supported by increasing city-break demand and continued investment from airline partners.

This year alone, easyJet has opened its three-aircraft base at NCL, allowing it to serve 22 destinations and launch a range of new routes including Lisbon, Rome, Nice, Prague, Malta, Reykjavik and Barcelona. Ryanair has also added its third based aircraft at NCL, providing more than 12,000 additional dears and introducing five new European routes.

Additional regional airlines have also invested in the northeast England airport as Norwegian offered direct flights to Copenhagen for the first time, Eurowings reinstated its seasonal Berlin service and Jet2.com launched three new summer destinations from May 2026.

With 14 airline partners now flying from NCL, Ion believes the airport has several competitive advantages that support future route development efforts.

“Firstly, we have a strong, defined catchment area. There is no major competing airport within a three-hour drive time,” he explained. “Secondly, the northeast of England has numerous conditions that demand international travel through world-leading universities, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries, and sporting events. Finally, our airport has exceptional operational delivery. With most operations handled in-house, it allows us to give airlines and passengers a great experience.”

That focus on customer experience has been recognized internationally. NCL was named Best Airport in Europe, in the 5 to 15 million passenger category, at the 2025 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Customer Experience Awards. The airport was also one of only eight worldwide to be inducted in the Airports Council International (ACI) World Director General’s Roll of Excellence for 2025.

Having spoken to multiple airlines during Routes Europe 2026, Ion believes the event produces valuable partnerships to support their ongoing strategy: “Aviation is all about the people and the connections. For me, Routes is the event to be seen at.

“The airline meetings are the core part but the side conversations at networking events support meeting key contacts, business partners and others across the industry. It’s a great place to celebrate our shared successes and the resilience of the industry overall. Routes is a key part of our diary, and we look forward to it every year.”

Alongside face-to-face engagement, NCL continues to use its Routes 360 membership to maintain visibility within the global route development community and promote opportunities to prospective airline partners.

“The Routes 360 platform is very easy to use and certainly enhances what we do,” said Ion. “We can upload any routes we see potential for on our profile, giving information for airlines to review. The Routes team has been proactive in helping Newcastle Airport promote our unserved and unserved opportunities. It is a core part of our engagement with airlines.”
