What’s On The Horizon For: Isavia Regional Airports
Isavia Regional Airports operate two key gateways to northeast Iceland’s natural landscapes: Akureyri International Airport (AEY) in the north and Egilsstaðir International Airport (EGS) in the east.
In recent years, Isavia Regional Airports has experienced steady growth. In 2023, AEY, located in Iceland’s second most populous town, reached a major milestone when easyJet became the first foreign carrier to launch scheduled international service, beginning with flights from London Gatwick. The airline has since added Manchester to its network.
With a regional population of over 18,000, the area offers strong tourism potential. To support anticipated growth, AEY inaugurated a new terminal as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations. The expanded 33,000 sq m airfield includes two designated jet zones and has increased the airport’s capacity from 4–5 aircraft to 12–14.
Speaking at Routes Europe 2025, Sigrun Bjork Jakobsdottir, CEO of Isavia Regional Airports, said the group is eager to collaborate with new partners to develop sustainable routes. Backed by a government-funded route development program and a competitive incentive scheme, the airports are targeting network expansion to destinations in Germany, France, and Scandinavia.
Jakobsdottir added: “We’ve seen increased interest from the east to connect Scandinavian destinations to the artic regions, including north Iceland.”
Attending her first Routes event, Jakobsdottir described Routes Europe 2025 as a valuable experience, highlighting “fruitful discussions regarding the sustainability of new routes.”
