Tunisia prepares for improved tourism this year
Tunisia prepares for 5.5 million foreign tourists this year after increasing security at hotels and airports.
Tourism minister, Salma Elloumi Rekik, said she was urging European leaders to support the country’s economy and lift warnings against travelling to Tunisia.
A fall in tourism after last year’s terrorist attacks at a hotel in Sousse lead to a slowdown in economic growth, 0.8% compared to 2.3% a year earlier.
“We aim to attract at least 5.5 million tourists like last year ... There are some early bookings and indications that last-minute bookings will rise with the continued stability of the security situation,” said Elloumi Rekik.
More than 100 hotels have closed since the attacks, and some foreign tour groups have cancelled routes, cruises and packages.
