The U.S. Transportation Department (DOT) disallowed 13 routes operated or to be operated by Mexican airlines to the U.S., the latest salvo in a long-running dispute between the countries over air services. Aeromexico’s flights between Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) and San Juan, Puerto Rico, will be prohibited, as will the carrier’s services from Felipe Angeles International Airport (NLU)—Mexico City’s second airport—to Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and McAllen in Texas. Volaris’ MEX-Newark route has also been prohibited. Nine proposed Viva Aerobus routes from NLU will not be allowed by DOT. These include proposed service from NLU to Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas, New York John F. Kennedy, Chicago O’Hare, Denver, IAH, Los Angeles, Miami and Orlando. DOT said Mexico has shown “blatant disregard” for the countries’ 2015 air services agreement. The U.S. strongly objected to Mexico’s action taken in 2023 to force freighter operators, including U.S. carriers FedEx and United Parcel Service, to move Mexico City operations from MEX to NLU, which opened in March 2022. NLU, a former military base converted for commercial operations, is located about 30 mi. from MEX and is viewed by carriers as much less desirable for efficiently moving cargo through and around Mexico City. Mexico has also reduced slots for U.S. passenger carriers at MEX. DOT is additionally proposing to prohibit Mexican airlines from transporting belly cargo between MEX and the U.S., though that order has not been finalized. DOT last month ordered Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico to end their transborder joint venture, saying the partnership distorted competition in U.S.-Mexico markets.
