For over 30 years, its mobile teaching hospital has been at the heart of its work to build local capacity for eye care. Now, a next generation Flying Eye Hospital is on the horizon for Orbis, as the McDonnell Douglas MD-10 donated by FedEx continues its journey to completion and entry to service, as the international sight-saving charity continues to work to help eliminate avoidable blindness around the world.
Orbis hopes the new MD-10 will take to the sky next year and has provided Routesonline with an update in the progress to turn the old freighter aircraft into a fully fledged flying teaching hospital.
In Vermont, nine customised modules containing the new hospital rooms were recently completed and tested and have now travelled by road across the US to be installed upon the aircraft. While in California, modifications of the aircraft continue with changes to the floor structure, the installation of the hospital’s air conditioning, and water systems and changing room and toilet facilities.
