Our Routes 360 Meet the Team feature brings the people and personalities within an airport’s aviation development to the forefront. This week we speak to Münster/Osnabrück Airport.

What recent organisational changes have taken place at Münster/Osnabrück Airport?

At the beginning of 2026, Andrés Heinemann, who had led the marketing and communications department at FMO for many years, became the new airport’s CEO. As a result, the formerly very broad department was reorganised and a new department with a dedicated focus was established: Aviation Business Development.

Mathias Richter will lead and develop the new department. Together with Detlef Döbberthin, the team will support existing and potential partners from the airline and tour operator sectors. In addition, the team also supports traffic development in the areas of general aviation and climate-neutral/sustainable air transport. Alongside business development, the department is also responsible for various other traffic-related tasks, including traffic statistics, short-term and long-term traffic forecasts and schedule planning.

What recent achievements are you most proud of?

FMO can look back on a successful 2025. With a total of 1,253,780 passengers, the passenger numbers remained almost at the same level as in 2024 (-2%) which is particularly remarkable given the discontinuation of Lufthansa's Frankfurt route at the end of 2024.

Compared to 2019, FMO recorded growth of 26%. This means that traffic at Münster/Osnabrück Airport developed significantly better than German air traffic as a whole. Only few airports have recovered and Germany’s passenger numbers remain around 13% below pre-COVID-19 levels.

What are the main goals your team is looking to achieve in the remainder of the year?

First all of, our aim is to have a successful 2026 like the previous years. The outlook is currently promising. LEAV Aviation starts as a new airline and two new routes will be launched along existing ones: Fuerteventura and Rhodes. Other carriers, such as Corendon Airlines and SunExpress, will also increase their capacity.

Secondly, in few months’ time, we will start talking to the airlines about the S27. There are few key routes with high potential, some that have been served until recently. One of these key routes is Hurghada, which was only lost when two carriers decided on withdraw in the short-term. This route was served year-round for many years, reaching a considerable passenger volume of 30,000 per year by 2024. Considering that other key leisure routes for the German market will be served from FMO with high frequency (Antalya up to 7 daily departures, Palma de Mallorca up to 5 daily departures and Heraklion up to 1 daily departure), Hurghada is completely absent.

What is your approach to building and maintaining airline relationships?

Our approach is based on proactive, open and authentic communication. We keep airlines constantly informed about FMO, initially raising the awareness of FMO and its interesting USPs, and then providing up-to-date data and information on developments. We also aim to respond to enquiries and support partners very quickly.
