After inaugurating international service to the U.S. in January, Canada’s Lynx Air is expanding its network to Mexico during the first quarter of 2024.

Cancun will become the ULCC’s first destination in the country, with flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) starting on Feb. 15. The route to Cancun International Airport (CUN) will operate daily using the airline’s fleet of nine Boeing 737-8s.

“With winter approaching, we know Canadians love to travel south in search of warmer weather and sandy beaches,” Chief Commercial Officer Vijay Bathija says, adding that Lynx’s service will provide a new low-cost option for passengers.

According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, the airline will be one of seven carriers to serve the Toronto-Cancun market on a city-pair basis this winter. Air Canada, Air Transat, Canada Jetlines, Flair Airlines, Sunwing Airlines and WestJet will all provide flights between YYZ and CUN, while Air Transat, Sunwing and WestJet will also offer service from Toronto John C. Munro Hamilton Airport.

Two-way weekly capacity between the cities will total more than 41,000 two-way weekly seats by late-January 2024, compared with about 29,000 in January 2020 before the onset of the pandemic.

“Demand for Cancun continues to be incredibly high for passengers traveling from Toronto Pearson,” says The Greater Toronto Airports Authority Director of Strategic Customer Relationships Janik Reigate. “We welcome Lynx’s new service as it will provide passengers with another option to fly to the sunny beaches of Mexico.”

Lynx, whose CEO Merren McArthur departed in September, has been steadily expanding its international footprint since launching flights to the U.S. at the start of the year. Nine new transborder routes have been scheduled for the second half of 2023, including service from YYZ to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which started on Oct. 12.
