“Less opposition” to Ryanair–Aer Lingus merger
The Irish government’s opposition to the merger of Aer Lingus and Ryanair has softened since the low-cost carrier’s last bid in 2006, Ireland’s Sunday Tribune has claimed.
The government, which owns more than 25% of Aer Lingus, initially opposed Ryanair's first offer in 2006, but is more open to its latest € 750 million offer, the newspaper reported.
"I wouldn't put it at 50-50 that the government will endorse the deal. It's more like 35-65. But two years ago it was 99-1 (against)," one senior figure was quoted as saying.
But a spokeswoman for the Irish transport ministry said it would not comment until Ryanair submits its formal bid for Aer Lingus, which is expected in the next two weeks.
