Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has broken ground on a $1.6 billion construction project that will add a sixth passenger terminal to the airport.

The new Terminal F, with a targeted opening of 2027, will span 400,000 ft.2. Also part of the project is adding 100,000 ft.2 more space to Terminal E, which will include check-in, security and baggage claim facilities for passengers using Terminal F. The new terminal will not house those facilities.

Passengers “using Terminal F will check in at Terminal E and connect between both facilities with a quick one-terminal transfer via the airport’s Skylink system, which will welcome a new station above Terminal F,” DFW said.

The Terminal F groundbreaking comes just over two months after DFW started construction on a $3 billion project to rebuild Terminal C, which is the busiest of the five terminals at American Airlines’ base hub.

DFW handled 81.8 million passengers in 2023, up 11.7% year over year. Only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Dubai International Airport handled more annual passengers last year.

The Terminal C rebuild project, which also includes an expansion of Terminal A, will add nine total gates. That project is expected to be done in phases and be fully completed in 2030. Terminal F will add 15 more gates to the airport.

DFW currently has a total of 171 gates across its five terminals. The airport has seven runways.

DFW said Terminal F has been designed so more gates can be added in the future.
