Twenty-four new routes have been added to Stockholm Arlanda Airport’s (ARN) schedule so far this year, including flights from Newark by United Airlines and from Amman aboard Royal Jordanian.

Wizz Air is the latest carrier to reveal plans to establish operations from the airport, alongside its existing flights from Göteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT) and Malmö Airport (MMX). Two new routes are being launched from Oct. 31 to Budapest, Hungary, and Gdansk, Poland. The move increases LCC penetration from ARN, adding to the bases opened by Ryanair and Eurowings.

Alongside the growth in connectivity, Elizabeth Axtelius, director of aviation business at airport operator Swedavia, said investments are being made to improve the passenger journey.

“The first phase of our brand-new 11,500-sq-m central Marketplace was opened at the end of September, and subsequent phases will gradually be taking place in 2024 and early 2025.

“We are creating a completely new destination for retail, food and beverage with a clear Scandinavian commercial design theme with more than 40 new shops and restaurants.”

Looking ahead, Axtelius said European traffic has been increasing at a “fast pace” and is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, but demand is outstripping supply. “At Swedavia, we would like to be able to make a stronger offer both from Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvetter Airport, in order to meet this demand,” she said.

“Intercontinental traffic to both North America and Asia is of great importance to both the airport as well as the region, and we would like to strengthen that as we see a large opportunity in this market.”
