Cimber Ramps Up Copenhagen Services
Cimber Sterling is adding new routes to Amsterdam and Zurich from October and a new service to Sabiha Gökçen from November 2. The routes will primarily be served with B737-700 aircraft.
The carrier's 12-times weekly service to Amsterdam will compete with KLM, SAS and Norwegian. Between April 2009 and 2010, over 330,000 O&D passengers flew between the two points and KLM has a 46% share of this market.
Cimber will be the only LCC flying between Copenhagen and Zurich, but will compete with Swiss and SAS.
To Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen, Cimber's new twice-weekly service will compete with Turkey's Pegasus Airlines and AnadoluJet, which will take over the route in August from Turkish Airlines.
Newcastle Nets Five Routes
Jet2.com is expanding from its Newcastle base, with new seasonal services to Prague (November 5), Krakow (March 28), Alicante (April 1), Faro (April 2) and Toulouse (May 2).
The low-cost carrier's network from Newcastle now spans 24 destinations.
In the summer 2011 schedule, services will also be added from Newcastle to Ibiza, Mahon, Malaga, Tunisia, Murcia and Palma.
Turkish Adds Washington Dulles Link
Turkish Airlines has announced plans to serve Washington Dulles from Istanbul starting on November 7.
The route will be offered five times a week operated with A330-200 aircraft.
Turkish already serves New York (JFK) 10 times a week, Chicago (ORD) on a daily basis and Toronto thrice weekly.
IATA BSP data shows that between April 2009 and 2010, over 360,000 O&D passengers travelled between Istanbul and the US (two-way traffic).
LOT Lands Georgia Service
As part of its expansion in the east, Poland's national carrier will begin a three-times weekly service from Warsaw to Tbilisi in Georgia on September 15.
The route will be operated with an ERJ-175 aircraft.
According to Flightbase, 34% of the market from Warsaw to Tbilisi travel via Minsk with Belavia.
So far this year, LOT opened direct flights to Tallinn (April), Bratislava (May), Beirut (June) and Yerevan (July). The carrier will also launch a three-times a week to Hanoi on November 13.
A spokesperson for LOT confirmed that negotiations are also underway to start new services to Damascus and Cairo this year.
SAS Boosts Intra-Scandinavian Network
SAS has announced plans to add 62 departures a week to its Scandinavian network, due to strong load factors and current booking trends.
SAS plans to add two daily departures between Copenhagen and Stockholm, bringing the total number of daily flights to 15 from September 1.
Plus, the airline has confirmed that in the autumn, capacity on services from Copenhagen to Bergen, Oslo, Stavanger will be increased.
