Emirates trialling new waypoints on Europe-S.America route

Emirates Airlines is trialling the use of new waypoints across the Mid-Atlantic as part of a bid to find shorter routes and to reduce CO2 emissions.

The airline is joining Delta Airlines in the trial, which runs from 30 June to 24 August 2011, within the Dakar FIR/UIR.

The four new waypoints allow more crossing segments to the Europe – South American (EUR/SAM) corridor and introduce more entry and exit points to and from the Atlantic Ocean Random Routing RNAV Area (AORRA) airspace.
Currently, there is only one available option to cross the EUR/SAM corridor within the Dakar oceanic airspace - airway UL435. But along this route aircraft can now cross four main airways - UN741, UN866, UN873 and UN857 – when travelling between South America and Europe.
Additional entry/exit points on the AORRA airspace boundary are also available during the trial period.
The additional flight planning options will also bring safety benefits, especially for weather avoidance in the active Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, prone to thunderstorm activity.
If the trial is successful and once analysis of the data collected has been completed, the new waypoints will become available to all operators, according to the International Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations (IFALPA).
