Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is pursuing additional long-haul routes to the Middle East, Africa and Asia as a £500 million ($670 million) investment program creates room for further airline expansion.

“Building on the success of our transatlantic network, where direct capacity is now 141% higher than in 2019, we continue to work with airline partners to grow connectivity to North America,” Lynsey Burns, Edinburgh Airport's head of aviation, told Routes. “At the same time, we are looking to replicate that success eastwards, with strong opportunities for airlines serving the Middle East, Africa and Asia.”

The strategy comes as the airport, which won the 10-17.5 Million category at Routes World 2026 Awards, handles record passenger volumes. More than 17.5 million travelers used EDI during the 12 months through September 2026, almost 20% above pre-pandemic levels.

The airport added 15 routes during 2026, including American Airlines’ Airbus A321XLR service to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Luxair also commenced EDI service and has already increased frequencies for summer 2027 following its first year of operations.

OAG Schedules Analyser data shows airlines offered approximately 6.89 million departure seats from Edinburgh during summer 2026, up 5.2% from 6.55 million a year earlier. The airport was linked with 159 destinations, compared with 155 in summer 2025.

North America accounted for a significant share of the increase. Capacity to JFK rose 46.6% to approximately 106,400 departure seats after American entered the market alongside Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways.

Burns said the airport remains interested in further North American opportunities while looking to apply the same demand-led approach to markets east of Scotland. Edinburgh already has Gulf links through Doha and Dubai, while Hainan Airlines connects the airport with Beijing.

Short-haul airlines are also expanding. EasyJet and Ryanair, Edinburgh’s two largest operators, increased summer capacity by 6.6% and 11.3%, respectively. EasyJet and Jet2 have already announced a combined nine new routes for 2027.

The expansion is continuing into the winter season. Airlines are scheduled to offer approximately 3.66 million departure seats during winter 2026-27, up 3.3% year over year. The number of destinations rises from 130 to 134.

Edinburgh is investing £500 million to ensure its facilities can accommodate further growth. The airport describes the program as the largest capital investment in a Scottish aviation project.

“Work is already underway, with new aircraft stands delivered in 2026 and eight new gates and eight new stands due to come into operation by summer 2027,” Burns said. “Over time, the program will increase the airport’s footprint by 60% and enhance facilities across the campus.”
