SINGAPORE—Construction of Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s (SGN) third terminal is expected to commence by the end of August now that the consortium of builders and developers has been finalized.

Six companies won a bid for VND9 trillion ($378 million) to build the new terminal for the airport in Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam, in 20 months, local paper VNExpress reported. The consortium is made of up of Hanoi Construction Corporation, Construction Corporation No.1, and 319 Construction Corporation—under Vietnam’s National Defense Ministry; Truong Son Construction, under the Vietnam People’s Army; Ricons Construction Investment; and Luu Nguyen Construction.

The 112,500 m2 (1.2 million ft.2) terminal will have 27 new gates, 90 check-in counters, 40 kiosks for self-check-in and automatic baggage counters. Terminal 3 will serve domestic flights with a capacity of 20 million passengers annually and increase the total handling capacity of SGN to 50 million passengers. Although it was designed with a capacity of 25 million passengers, SGN has been operating at double its handling capacity since 2017.

The project was set to commence in 2021 but was delayed by two years due to land-clearance issues. 

CAPA – Centre for Aviation and OAG Schedules Analyser data shows 80% of all movements from SGN are domestic, with Hanoi, Danang and Phu Quoc the most popular destinations. The top international destinations by available seat kilometers served by SGN are Seoul Incheon, followed by Tokyo Narita and Taipei, Taiwan.
