SINGAPORE—Changi Airports International and Cairo Airport Company have signed two consultancy agreements to develop Cairo International airport (CAI) in areas of customer experience and cargo traffic.

The first agreement is to implement solutions to improve passenger experience at CAI, while the second is to conduct a feasibility study for the potential development of Cairo Cargo City, a new area at Cairo International Airport for cargo and logistics development.

The agreements were signed during a visit to Singapore by Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed Abbas Helmy.

“We seek to unlock Cairo Airport’s tremendous potential for growth, leveraging on its status as one of the busiest airports in Africa by passenger and cargo volumes,” Changi Airports International CEO Eugene Gan said. “We also look forward to not only providing impactful solutions in the short term, but to a longer-term partnership with Cairo Airport Company.”

Pre-pandemic, CAI handled 20 million passengers and 361,000 tons of cargo in 2019.

CAPA OAG data shows the majority of cargo capacity from CAI is bound for the Middle East, followed by Western Europe and North America. Meanwhile, 12% of cargo capacity goes to the United Arab Emirates and 10.8% to Saudi Arabia.
