Angola’s government has announced that a consortium led by Corporacion America Airports (CAAP) has won the contract to operate and develop the country’s newly opened international gateway, Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport (NBJ).

The Luxembourg-headquartered airport operator will oversee operations at the $3 billion facility in partnership with Portuguese construction firm Mota-Engil. Mota-Engil is CAAP’s partner in the winning consortium.

Angola had been running an evaluation of two joint venture bids over the past year as it sought the best solution for the airport’s 20-year management concession.

Located some 25 mi. southeast of capital Luanda, the new airport is taking over all scheduled passenger services from Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, located near the city center.

Angola’s national carrier, TAAG Angola Airlines, transferred its international operations to the new airport on Oct. 8.

The airport began a phased opening in late 2023, initially handling air cargo operations. TAAG subsequently moved its domestic flights to the new facility in November 2024.

The first phase of the airport includes a single terminal with an annual capacity of 15 million passengers, while the cargo terminal has a capacity of 130,000 metric tons annually.

The airport has two runways, with one so far in operation.
