Andalucía is emphasizing sustainability as a cornerstone of its tourism and aviation strategy as delegates gather for Routes Europe 2025 in Seville, Spain.

Arturo Bernal, regional minister for tourism and foreign affairs of the Junta de Andalucía, said the region is taking concrete steps to manage growth responsibly. "Andalucía's tourism strategies are guided by the General Plan for the Sustainable Tourism of Andalucía META 2027, which aligns with national and European sustainability objectives."

He acknowledged the challenges associated with increased demand, including overtourism. "This plan addresses challenges such as overtourism and aims to distribute tourist flows more evenly throughout the year."

The government is promoting alternative tourism models to help combat seasonality and protect the region’s assets. "Efforts are underway to highlight Andalucía's cultural and natural assets, including its numerous protected areas and historical sites," Bernal said. "Initiatives like 'Andalucía Con Ciencia' promote scientific and ecological tourism, encouraging visits during traditionally quieter periods."

The region is also aligning with national airport operator Aena’s sustainability goals. Aena, which manages all of Andalucía’s commercial airports, has committed to achieving carbon neutrality at its terminals by 2026, investing €750 million ($810 million) to reduce emissions.

Bernal said the Routes Europe conference in Seville presents a unique opportunity for collaboration. "We invite the aviation industry to collaborate in shaping the future of travel in Andalucía and Europe, ensuring we grow sustainably and responsibly for generations to come,” he added.
