Algeria is planning to build a new civilian airport and new city in the north of the country.

The projects will be located near Boughezoul, about 170 km (106 mi.) south of Algiers and are expected to become a major development hub for the region.

Algeria’s Ministry of Public Works, which is overseeing the airport project, initially shortlisted three potential sites. Those locations were later ruled out, and a fourth site has now been selected, with final approval pending from relevant authorities.

The Boughezoul new city project is based on sustainable development principles and is designed to accommodate a population of up to 400,000 people.

The planned airport is intended to improve access to Boughezoul and surrounding regions while expanding Algeria’s capacity to handle growing numbers of tourists and business travelers. Authorities say the facility will play a key role in supporting economic activity and strengthening domestic and international connectivity.

The projects are part of Algeria’s broader effort to modernize and expand its aviation and transport sectors.

In June 2025, Air Algerie acquired Tassili Airlines from Sonatrach Holdings, rebranding it as Domestic Airlines, which officially launched its domestic operations in August 2025.

The flag carrier followed up the takeover with an order for 16 ATR 72-600 aircraft for Domestic Airlines, the largest order placed by any African customer with the European aircraft manufacturer.

The new aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028.
