Airline In Focus: ITA Airways

Italia Trasporto Aereo, trading as ITA Airways, is the flag carrier of Italy. The airline commenced services in October 2021 and replaced previous flag carrier, Alitalia. 

ITA purchased the Alitalia brand for €90 million. However, it was required by the European Commission to display clear discontinuity between the two companies, in order to permit the injection of state funds.

Lufthansa Group finalised its acquisition of a 41% stake in ITA Airways in January 2025, completing the approved transaction of a €325 million capital increase. Following the move, ITA Airways joined Star Alliance in March 2026.
