Air Canada to Launch Toronto Island Services on May 1

Air Canada will commence service from the Toronto Island's Billy Bishop Airport on May 1, after reaching a terminal agreement with City Centre Terminal Corp, the airport terminal owned by Porter Aviation Holdings. Air Canada's initial schedule will provide up to 15 daily non-stop return flights between downtown Toronto and Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

"Air Canada is extremely pleased to return to Toronto Island and expand the range of travel options for our customers," said Ben Smith, Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, Air Canada. "This unique service between downtown Toronto and Montreal will provide more choice and added convenience for our customers travelling between Canada's two largest cities," The new service will be operated by Bombardier Dash 8 Q-400 turboprops of Sky Regional Airlines, an associated company of Skyservice Business Aviation.

According to Air Canada: “Selection of Sky Regional Airlines was based on a number of criteria including a competitive cost structure, a proven track record in customer service excellence and experience maintaining Dash 8- Q400 aircraft.”

Air Canada already operates 148 weekly flights between Toronto and Montreal from Lester B Pearson International and will now compete directly with Porter Airlines from the downtown airport, the latter flying 84 weekly services, also using Q400s. Approximately 380,000 O+D passengers travelled between Toronto City and Montreal Trudeau in 2010, with Air Canada carrying around 985,000 on its own flights from Toronto's main airport.
