TAP Air Portugal will add Los Angeles to its North American network next summer, launching nonstop service from Lisbon as part of a broader expansion that includes two additional Portugal-U.S. routes.
Flights between Lisbon Airport and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) are slated to begin on May 16, 2025, initially operating three times per week through Oct. 25 using Airbus A330-900neo aircraft. A fourth weekly roundtrip will start on May 25.
According to Sabre Market Intelligence data, Lisbon-Los Angeles was the largest unserved city pair between Portugal and the U.S. during 2023, attracting some 71,500 two-way O&D passengers. TAP already has a codeshare partnership in place with fellow Star Alliance member United Airlines, which operates a hub out of LAX.
Alongside the addition of Los Angeles, TAP will offer new routes to two existing cities in its network: Boston and San Francisco.
Flights linking Porto Airport and Boston Logan International Airport will start on May 14, operating on four times per week through Oct. 25 using A321LRs. A route connecting Terceira in the Azores and San Francisco International Airport will follow on June 3, with weekly flights through Aug. 26 on A330-900neos.
During the peak summer 2024 season, TAP offered approximately 43,200 two-way weekly seats between Portugal and North America, OAG Schedules Analyser data shows—an increase of about 41% compared to summer 2019 levels. Speaking to Aviation Week in September, Head of Strategy Henri-Charles Ozarovsky said the carrier was “constantly evaluating destinations” in North America.
Several major destinations in the region are currently unserved nonstop from Portugal, including cities such as Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Houston and Vancouver, as well as Mexico’s capital Mexico City, which attracts sizable indirect flows.
TAP will celebrate its 80th anniversary of service in 2025. It first started flights between Portugal and the U.S. in 1969. The addition of Los Angeles will increase its U.S. network to eight destinations alongside Boston, Chicago, Miami, Newark, New York John F. Kennedy, San Francisco and Washington Dulles.
