In a surprise move, Indian carrier IndiGo has named current IATA Director General Willie Walsh to be its next CEO.

Walsh is due to step down from the IATA role on July 31 and is expected to take over as IndiGo CEO no later than Aug. 3, the carrier said. IndiGo noted the move is subject to regulatory approvals.

Walsh is the first Director General of the association to return to an airline job. The move is a major coup for IndiGo as Walsh is very highly regarded in the industry both for his work as head of the global airline association and his previous roles leading major airlines.

Walsh said at the December 2024 IATA global media day that he had extended his original contract that would have run until mid-2025 by another two years until the 2027 annual general assembly. The global airline association will now have to find a replacement for him sooner than previously planned.

“The Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Willie Walsh, has announced that he will complete his tenure as Director General on 31 July 2026,” IATA wrote in a statement. “Mr. Walsh remains in post at IATA until then. The IATA Board of Directors has been preparing for a leadership transition and the search for Mr. Walsh’s successor is well advanced.”

Walsh’s four immediate predecessors at IATA were former airline CEOs Alexandre de Juniac (Air France-KLM), Tony Tyler (Cathay Pacific), Giovanni Bisignani (Alitalia) and Pierre Jean Jeanniot (Air Canada). IndiGo’s previous CEO Pieter Elbers is among top airline executives currently without CEO assignment. Air India’s Campbell Wilson will soon complete his four-year term. Michael Rousseau, president and CEO of Air Canada, plans to retire by the end of the third quarter.

The opportunity for Walsh to return to airline management came up after Elbers resigned from the Indian carrier on March 10. This followed regulatory and political fallout from the carrier’s network meltdown in early December. IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia assumed interim control of the carrier until a new CEO could be appointed.

Walsh, 64, was confirmed as head of IATA in November 2020. Before that he was CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG) from 2011-2020, CEO of British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and COO and CEO of Aer Lingus from 2000 to 2005. IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta described Walsh as “an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record of outstanding leadership across several airlines.”

Walsh’s “experience in managing large scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics make him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth in an ever evolving and competitive international aviation environment,” Mehta said.

Bhatia said Walsh is “an iconic and accomplished aviation leader and brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise of having built strong customer-focused airlines, deep industry experience and a values driven leadership.”

Walsh noted that IndiGo “has a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation.” Walsh said he is looking forward to “partnering with colleagues across the organization to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration and sustainable value for all stakeholders.”
