Brazilian carrier Gol Linhas Aereas has received its first widebody aircraft ahead of the start of nonstop service between Rio de Janeiro Galeao International Airport (GIG) and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
The Airbus A330 arrived in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and will operate the carrier’s inaugural 3X-weekly GIG-JFK service from July 8. The aircraft is being provided under a temporary aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance agreement with Spain’s Wamos Air, which is also part of the Abra Group, before Gol’s own A330-900s arrive later this year.
“With a capacity of up to 300 passengers and a flight range of up to 15 hours, this twin-aisle aircraft arrives to support Gol’s new expansion phase,” the airline says, adding that the temporary arrangement enables it to “rapidly increase operational capacity during this initial phase of expanding Gol’s international network.”
Gol has traditionally operated an all-Boeing 737 fleet focused on Brazil’s domestic market and short-haul international routes across Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the arrival of the A330 marks a new chapter for the airline, with Lisbon, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orlando due to join New York on its long-haul network.
According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, Gol will become the fourth-largest airline in the Brazil-U.S. market by scheduled seats during July 2026, behind LATAM Airlines Group, American Airlines and United Airlines, but ahead of Delta Air Lines and Azul Brazilian Airlines.
Gol will be the sole carrier offering nonstop service between Rio and New York when flights begin, although American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are scheduled to resume the route during the northern winter 2026-27 season.
Sabre Market Intelligence figures show about 125,000 two-way origin and destination passengers traveled between Rio and New York during 2025, making it Rio’s largest U.S. market. Orlando ranked second with about 112,400 passengers, narrowly ahead of Miami with almost 109,600.
