Emirates announced a major investment on Nov. 3 of more than $23 million to expand its use of facial recognition technology across Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB).
The airline has installed over 200 biometric cameras, identifying travelers from as far as one meter away, and enabling travelers to move through key airport touchpoints—including check-in, immigration, lounges, boarding gates, and aircraft boarding, using facial recognition—without the need to present a passport or boarding pass.
The new initiative is a collaboration between Emirates and the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigner Affairs Dubai (GDRFAD).
“With our latest Biometrics Path development, Emirates has invested in further innovations to enhance the customer travel experience, providing remarkable speed, efficiency, and accuracy at Terminal 3,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ deputy president and chief operating officer. “Since 2017, we have worked closely with GDRFAD to upgrade our systems and deliver a world-class, seamless journey.”
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, director general of the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai, said, “Together, we are shaping a seamless travel experience that embodies reputation of the United Arab Emirates in general, and Dubai in particular, for efficiency, hospitality, and digital governance.”
Travelers can activate the service through the Emirates app.
