EgyptAir has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737-8 from an order book with lessor SMBC Aviation Capital.
The Egyptian flag carrier has 18 of the narrowbodies on order from the lessor as part of its fleet modernization strategy.
Welcoming the initial aircraft, EgyptAir Holding Chairman and CEO Ahmed Adel said the 737-8 would offer passengers a more upscale and comfortable experience while also significantly boosting the airline’s operational efficiency. The airline’s current fleet includes 30 examples of the previous-generation 737-800. The airline also operates the competing Airbus A320neo.
“The advanced technology and reduced environmental footprint of these aircraft align with the company’s vision for sustainable growth,” Adel said.
As part of its continuing fleet modernization program, EgyptAir will deploy its incoming 737-8s on short- and medium-haul regional and international routes, including destinations such as Paris, Brussels, Istanbul and Vienna.
“This delivery underscores our longstanding partnership with Boeing and our commitment to providing EgyptAir with efficient, next-generation aircraft that enhance operational performance and deliver a better passenger experience,” SMBC Aviation Capital Chief Commercial Officer Barry Flannery said.
Boeing VP of commercial sales and marketing for Africa Anbessie Yitbarek also welcomed the delivery as “an important step toward the airline’s modernization goals.”
