AirAsia will have the lift to match its ambition after signing a contract with Airbus for 40 A320 family aircraft and 30 options, the manufacturer announced yesterday. The deal is worth approximately $2.7 billion, according to press reports. AirAsia Group, comprising the Malaysian mainline, Thai AirAsia and AirAsia Indonesia, is replacing its 737 fleet. It currently operates 21 737-300s and seven A320s, with another 53 already on order. Thai AirAsia has nine dash 300s.

Air Caraibes of Guadeloupe signed a contract for the purchase of an A330-300 for use on services to Paris. Delivery is scheduled for November 2008. The carrier operates two A330-200s and one dash 300. The new aircraft will seat 372 and replace a leased dash 200.

Horizon Air converted one option for a Q400 turboprop into a firm order worth $25.4 million at list price. It has 31 of the type on firm order and has acquired two others from Hainan Airlines. Caribbean Star Airlines took delivery of the second of four Q300s it is adding to its fleet this year.

Aeroflot plans to increase its increase its fleet of nine 767-300ERs and is looking to lease three from ILFC. It would take delivery in the last quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2007.

CityJet, Air France-KLM's Dublin-based Regional subsidiary, said it has concluded negotiations for the acquisition of 23 Avro RJ85s worth a combined $221 million. The supplier was not announced but likely they will come from BAE Systems, which continues to manage a number of the aircraft. CityJet will take first delivery in November. It now operates 19 BAe 146s. "The close relationship of the new aircraft type to the BAe 146 currently operated allows the airline to dovetail its introduction into the existing fleet," CityJet said.
