ACI announces global growth but African traffic continues to suffer
Airports Council International (ACI) has announced that global passenger traffic has seen moderate growth, and air freight volumes are slowly increasing.
Statistic have shown that global airport passenger traffic increased by 3.4% in April, while international passenger traffic grew faster than the domestic segment at 3.8%, and total passenger traffic grew by 6.2% when compared to the previous year.
Africa still faced declines in passenger traffic, at -6.8%, in spite of global growth.
Egypt and Tunisia experienced declines in total passenger traffic of 31.2% and 13.7% as a result of aviation security concerns, and Sharm el Sheikh (SSH, -78%, representing a year-over-year drop of 480,000 passengers) and Hurghada (HRG, -66% or – 463 thousand passengers) both showed significant loss.
The loss was not consistent across the continent, as both South Africa (+3.8%) and Nigeria (+5.1%) benefitted from traffic gains.
