Airbus and Lindo will study the use of antimicrobial blue light (ABL) disinfection technology on emergency medical services (EMS) helicopters in an effort to reduce pathogen transmission during airborne evacuations.

Airbus Australia Pacific and Airbus Helicopters signed a memorandum of understanding with Lindo, a Melbourne-based health tech company, at the RotorTech expo in Gold Coast, Australia.

While ABL systems are already used in healthcare facilities, the integration of continuous embedded infection-prevention technology on airborne platforms is nascent.

“The initial phase of the collaboration will center on feasibility studies, system integration and validation of ABL lighting solutions within Airbus Helicopters platforms, with a view toward certified aircraft integration in the longer term,” Airbus said in a statement.

Aviation Week understands the cabin integration research will initially focus on the Airbus H160 helicopter.

According to Aviation Week Fleet Discovery data, there are currently around 155 Airbus commercial helicopters operating in Australia and New Zealand, predominantly the Airbus H125, formerly known as the AS350.
