Romanian carrier Blue Air will grow its network at home and in Italy later this year.

Wizz Air UK’s new base at London Gatwick is a “statement of intent” but further expansion is being hindered by the ongoing suspension of the 80-20 rule for airport slots, the airline’s MD Owain Jones has told Routes.

The budget airline has already established itself as the largest carrier in Italy and held a 22.8 per cent share of available capacity this past summer season, according to OAG schedule data. The airline’s arrival into the Naples market means that from the forthcoming summer season it will have a presence at all but one of the 14 largest Italian airports by capacity; its only exception being Linate Airport, the secondary international airport of Milan.

easyJet will open the new base at Venice Marco Polo Airport from April 2016 with four Airbus aircraft stationed at the airport. The Italian city has for some time been a key network point for easyJet, having operated flights into and out of the city since 1998. It will also introduce three more aircraft at Milan Malpensa and a fourth jet at Naples.

Mainly targeting leisure demand, Mistral Air will offer twice weekly flights on the two routes on a seasonal summer only basis. These flights will operate between April 28, 2015 and September 1, 2015 and will be operated using Boeing 737-300 equipment configured with 144 seats.
