Northrop Grumman Corp. announced it has provided European Union regulatory authorities with the necessary filings related to its pending acquisition of Litton Industries Inc. The time period required to complete the EU regulatory review would have expired on March 23. Northrop Grumman and Litton announced last year that they signed a definitive agreement under which Northrop Grumman will acquire Litton in a transaction valued at about $5.1 billion (DAILY, Dec. 22, 2000).

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is eyeing the use of water as a propellant for satellites. The effort is being explored under the Orbital Express program, in which the Pentagon agency is developing systems for routine unmanned refurbishment and on-orbit refueling of satellites. Water, according to DARPA, could be a replaceable fluid for orbiting satellites because of its "potential as a simple, non-hazardous, energy efficient propellant."

NASA's next Mars orbiter, the 2001 Mars Odyssey, due to launch in April will not only map the Martian surface but will also measure the amount of radiation future astronauts will face there. Among the experiments onboard Odyssey will be the Mars Radiation Environment Experiment, given the acronym MARIE by NASA. The four kilogram, breadbox-sized experiment will measure radiation on the way to Mars as well as radiation while Odyssey orbits the planet.

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Jones yesterday downplayed news reports that said the MV-22 suffered three undisclosed major hydraulic leaks in the past few years. Jones said hydraulic problems are common among aircraft, including the CH-46, which the MV-22 is supposed to replace. "Like all other airplanes, sometimes things will go wrong. It doesn't mean that it's catastrophic," Jones told The DAILY yesterday after speaking at a seapower conference on Capitol Hill.

Richard M. "Dick" Carlson has been awarded the AHS Alexander A. Nikolsky Honorary Lectureship. The lecture will be delivered at the 57th AHS Annual Forum and technology Display in Washington, D.C. on May 10th. The Lectureship is awarded to "an individual who reflects the highest ideals, goals and achievements in the field of helicopter and V/STOL aircraft engineering and development."

The experimental X-31 aircraft flew again last weekend as part of the U.S.-German Vectoring ESTOL - Extremely Short Take-Off and Landing - Control Tailless Operation Research (VECTOR) program, EADS Military Aircraft, the German industrial partner within the program, reported Monday. The first flight for the new test phase took place February 24. Several taxi trials were conducted in January. The first flight test phase is scheduled for about six weeks.

Andre Thornton, an operations engineer and currently the project lead for a digital manufacturing technology initiative, received a Special recognition Award.

Qatar Airways has ordered two A380s and five A330-200s plus three options, Airbus said yesterday. The A380, launched in December, has received 66 firm orders from nine customers plus 54 options, Airbus said. Both Qatar A380s will be delivered in the last quarter of 2007 and deliveries of the A330s will begin in April 2002, replacing A300-600Rs. Airbus said the A380 has "won every single competition for very large aircraft so far."

Boeing said several airlines are evaluating a commercial version of the military's C-17 following a briefing by President Harry Stonecipher and other top Boeing officials, who briefed representatives of more than 40 companies and institutions. The conference was held in the last week of January in Long Beach an attracted more than 150 people, including executives "from many of the world's leading freight forwarders and cargo airlines," Boeing said.
