Inspection requirements were announced in late October for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Boeing F/A-18A through D model Hornets for stress cracks on a hinge connecting the aileron to the flaps on the rear of the wings after a crack was discovered during a routine flight inspection. Hinge failure could result in losing the aileron, possibly further damaging or even losing the aircraft, according to the Navy.

Requirements for replacing time-lifed components will get a closer look under an Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) initiative to streamline its unique, mandatory airworthiness directives. A proposal suggests combining a number of airworthiness directives also covered by aircraft maintenance manuals into a civil aviation order to eliminate some redundant requirements. CASA further notes these ADs do not satisfy the requirements of CASR Part 39. Civil Aviation Order 100.5 could include 11 such ADs being reviewed.

Lockheed Martin will apply its P-3 Aircraft Service Life Extension Program (ASLEP) to Canada’s fleet of CP-140 Aurora aircraft under a newly announced $156 million contract. Ten Canadian CP-140 Aurora aircraft will receive Life Extension Kits consisting of all-new outer wings, center wing lower surface assemblies, horizontal stabilizers, wing and horizontal stabilizer leading edges, and various other items to be installed as needed.

Jet Aviation Basel opened a 3,300-sq.-meter (35,520-sq.-ft.) hangar extension that will be used for Dassault Falcon completions. Jet Aviation said the hangar was completed in just seven months and cost CHF6 million. The hangar will boost completions and free up space for maintenance in other hangars.

SriLankan Airlines finished rolling out Miro Technologies ’ AuRa suite of enterprise management and business intelligence maintenance, engineering and materials management modules across its maintenance and engineering department. The implementation process took less than six months after initial evaluations.

In late October, Britain’s Ministry of Defense signed a £97 million, seven-year contract with Marshall Aerospace of Cambridge for logistic support of the RAF’s Lockheed TriStar strategic tanker/transport fleet. Known as the TRIOS contract (TriStar Integrated Operational Support), it will provide maintenance, engineering and technical support for the RAF's core passenger fleet until 2015, and strengthen the air-bridge service to and from theater areas.

The Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) process jointly developed and patented by the Huffman Corp. and Springfield Manufacturing is designed to remove coatings from turbine engine components without damaging them. The process also should be more environmentally friendly and cost effective than traditional methods.
