Aeroxchange expanded its agreement with Delta Air Lines through 2017 , building on an existing contract with Northwest Airlines. This month’s Paris Air Show is shaping up as an indicator of the aerospace industry’s health and confidence. As I mentioned in this space last month, I got conflicting signals from AVIATION WEEK’s MRO Americas Conference in April. The conference discussions sounded pretty gloomy, but the mood on the exhibit floor felt upbeat. Of course, Paris draws a much broader swath of the industry, so it should paint a more telling picture of the aerospace business as whole. I’ll be interested to hear about the mood and the chatter in the exhibit halls and on the chalet line.
Lufthansa Technik’s ‘nice’ inflight entertainment and cabin management system became available for retrofit to Bombardier Global and Challenger business jets. The retrofit is part of a package offered by Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services during D check inspections; it includes cabin refurbishment and complete repainting of the aircraft. Over the past few decades, we have seen a shift within the aviation industry to be more environmentally responsible. Although well-intentioned, some argue that environmentally friendly business can be at odds with profitable business. In my view, this logic is flawed. Environmentally friendly business practices and improving the bottom line don’t have to be mutually exclusive. I believe the crude oil sticker shock of 2008 taught our industry some important lessons and also emphasized the need to find creative solutions to change.

FlightSafety International says 40 of its full flight simulators have been qualified under the EASA flight simulator training device catch-up process, which allows European licensed flight crews under EASA to train with simulators located outside EASA member states’ jurisdiction. The 40 simulators are located at 15 FlightSafety learning centers in North America. Three new simulators at its London/Farnborough training center also received JAA Level D qualification from the U.K.’s Civil Aviation Authority.
Bell Helicopter won a $288 million production contract for Lot 6 of the H-1 Upgrade Program. This includes five AH-1Zs and 11 UH-1Ys being assembled at Bell’s Military Aircraft Assembly Center in Amarillo, Texas, for deliveries from 2011. Bell now is contracted to produce 65 upgraded H-1 helicopters for the Marines, comprising 17 AH-1Z attack and 48 UH-1Y utility aircraft. So far, the company has delivered 23 upgraded H-1 helicopters, comprising six AH-1Zs and 17 UH-1Ys.
The Commemorative Air Force brought James C. “Woody” Woodford on board as director of maintenance for its headquarters in Midland, Texas. Woodford, a 27-year CAF member, will report to Bob Stenevik, VP of operations and maintenance.
Northrop Grumman redelivered the U.S. Air Force’s first B-2 Stealth bomber equipped with a new radar, following installation of radar hardware developed by Raytheon Space & Airborne Systems under contract to the OEM and prime contractor. The Air Force plans to equip several operational B-2 aircraft with the new radar as part of the system development and demonstration phase of its B-2 radar modernization program. It will carry out more field tests with these aircraft to gather data in support of future fielding decisions.
Nayak Aircraft Service will offer several support options for the Sukhoi Superjet, according to Sales Manager Friedrich-Wilhelm Wilms. These will include both line maintenance and base maintenance, with structural repair in authorized service centers and technical training once the program is in operation.
