Air New Zealand upped the order of Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines for its 787 Dreamliners to eight firm and eight options, following its initial selection of the Trent 1000 for four firm aircraft in 2004. The new engine orders include a long-term TotalCare service agreement. In its most recent statement concerning its on-order 787-9s, Air New Zealand says it expects to receive its first aircraft in early 2012.
Grommet Edging System Protects Superjet Sukhoi’s Superjet 100 features a grommet edging system designed to protect its wiring from wear without requiring adhesives. The Spring-Fast M22529/2 grommet edging system is fitted on Sukhoi’s original prototypes, one of which made its debut at the Paris Air Show in June. The system’s manufacturer, Device Technologies, says the grommet edging should cut production and maintenance times and enhance operational safety.
Enhanced Moving Map Version 2 software is available for Rockwell Collins’ Airshow 4000 and Media Center three-dimensional moving map products. The new software encompasses more than 100 new features and enhancements, Rockwell Collins says, including: a new global map package with improved details and world coverage; innovative new time and flight status displays; realistic day and night views; a new heads-up display that offers a pilots-eye view of the flight; and a refreshed look and feel in all features.

Defense Holdings, Inc (DHi) has come up with a new kind of brush for transferring electric current through slip rings from stationary to rotating parts, such as rotors or propellers. By replacing the carbon brushes used for a century on slip rings with DHi’s more expensive but much more effective Metal Fiber Brushes (MFBs), aviation and other users can reduce life-cycle costs through longer service life and less maintenance costs.
PlaneTechs promoted David Pearson to president, filling the position left open when Ian Rollo left the company in mid-2008. Pearson formerly was PlaneTechs‘ SVP of sales.
Jet Aviation added maintenance services at its Seletar Airport and Moscow Vnukovo International Airport facilities. Jet Aviation Singapore added services for Bombardier Challenger 601/604/605 and Cessna 560XL aircraft under its EASA 145 maintenance approval. The company also plans to add to its line maintenance capabilities in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur. Jet Aviation Vnukovo now offers 24/7 line maintenance services and AOG support, and it expanded its AOG services to Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and other Russian airports.

This began a whole raft of changes aimed at making us more competitive. ExelTech interim CEO Robin Wohnsigl stepped down on Aug. 17 to revert to his role on the company’s board of directors. He is succeeded by Sylvain Duval, who served as ExelTech’s president and COO since April 2008. Stephen Hops also joined the company as VP operations, responsible for maintenance in both Montreal and Quebec, supply chain, quality assurance and training, planning, continuous improvement and customer relations.

The Federal Aviation Administration released an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking for potential Safety Management System requirements. The agency sent the ANPRM for Office of Management and Budget review in early July, and OMB cleared the advanced proposal within a few weeks. Comment period ends Oct. 21.
