Alaska Airlines will tap into Northwest's worldwide network under a marketing and code-sharing agreement, announced yesterday as one of the largest such arrangements ever between two major U.S. airlines. The agreement covers 280 flights a day to 37 cities, connecting Alaska's stronghold in the Pacific Northwest with Northwest's flights to the Pacific and its code-share service with KLM to Europe and beyond.

A Lockheed L-1011-200 aircraft converted to a freighter, said to be the first of its kind, has arrived at American International Airways in Ypsilanti, Mich., from Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge, England. Conrad Kalitta, AIA president, said the aircraft can carry up to 125,000 pounds of cargo as much as 5,300 miles. AIA purchased three L-10lls from British Airways for conversion last fall, with options for five more. The options have since been converted to firm orders, he said.

Singapore Airlines will offer double mileage to American's AAdvantage members and Delta's SkyMiles members traveling in first or business class on all segments of its new San Francisco-Seoul-Singapore route. The carrier launched the service July 11, and the promotion is effective Aug. 20-Dec. 31.

AeroNAFTA conference, sponsored by the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, Bell Helicopter Textron and Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems, will be held Oct. 5-6 at Fort Worth Alliance Airport. The conference will explore opportunities for the aviation and aerospace industries created by the North American Free Trade Agreement. Speakers include Rep. Pete Geren (D- Texas); Carlos Ruiz Sacristan, Mexico's secretary of communications and transport; and Edmundo del Valle Soria, Argentina's secretary of transportation.

Draft legislation to privatize major Australian airports would cap airport charges for five years and allow the Prices Surveillance Authority to monitor the charges.Non-Australian interests would be limited to 49% stakes in the long-term leases, and airlines would be limited to 5%. Leases would run 50 years and could be renewed for another 49.

TWA will launch nonstop service Oct. 1 from St. Louis to Jackson, Miss., and Reno. It will operate three daily flights on weekdays and two flights on weekends to Jackson, and two daily flights to Reno. With the new service, TWA will be operating 349 daily departures from its St. Louis hub. Trans World Express partner Trans States Airlines offers 177 departures. TWA said Jackson is poorly served for customers wanting to travel to business centers in the Midwest, and Reno customers will gain single- carrier connections to other stops in the Midwest and East.

Sempati Air will add a third weekly flight on its Jakarta-Kaohsiung route, beginning in September. It said the route, inaugurated April 27, is one of the company's fastest growing, with load factors averaging well over 70%.

Simmons Airlines' bid for six international slots at Chicago O'Hare Airport is drawing varied reactions from the aviation community. Simmons, an American Eagle carrier, applied for exemption from the High-Density Rule this month for the slots at the slot-controlled airport to inaugurate Chicago-London, Ontario, service (DAILY, Aug. 7). It plans to begin operating three daily roundtrips on the route Oct. 1, using Saab 340B aircraft.

TWA said it has canceled its Voting Trust Agreement and also will cancel the Voting Trust Certificates, representing the beneficial ownership of TWA's common stock. The move, ordered by the bankruptcy court, is one more step toward restructuring. LaSalle National Trust, voting trustee, requested the action because of concerns that the continuation of the agreement could delay distributions of securities to certificate holders under the reorganization plan. TWA expects to begin distributing common stock, warrants and equity rights before the end of August.

Preparing to emerge again from bankruptcy, TWA says it is in the market for new aircraft.In a filing update to DOT on its request for South Africa frequencies, the carrier said it "has started to acquire additional aircraft and is actively searching for international widebodied aircraft."Contacted on Friday, a TWA spokesman would not comment on the statement.

Air Line Pilots Association presented USAir Captain Thomas Kreamer with the 1994 Air Safety Award during the union's annual Air Safety Forum in Washington last week. Kreamer, chairman of USAir's ALPA Master Executive Council's violations and enforcement activities committee, has worked for more than 22 years on accident investigation and development of airborne collision avoidance systems.

Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) said travel agent sales processed during the first seven months of 1995 were up 5% from the same period last year, to $36.5 billion. International fares increased 2% and domestic fares 5%. Domestic commissions fell 1%, however, while international commissions were up 3%. For the month of July, domestic fares rose 8% and international fares 6%. The international commission rate of 17.51% in July was a record for a four-week month. The bookings are on 149 airlines and three railroads.

The Fort Worth city council unanimously approved last week a lease with SkyTeam Airlines, a Part 121 carrier that plans to offer intrastate service from Meacham Field to Houston, San Antonio and Austin by Nov. 15. An amendment added by the council provides that the approval does not obligate the city to offer a tax abatement program, but Jess Coker, SkyTeam executive VP, told The DAILY that even so, an abatement program will be negotiated later. He said the carrier plans to offer as many as 16 daily roundtrips in hushkit-equipped 737-200s, starting as soon as Nov.

DOT has assessed USAir Shuttle $25,000 in civil penalties and issued a consent order concerning the carrier's violation's of reporting requirements. In the order, the department asserted that the carrier had "a history of delinquency" filing required reports, citing the delayed filing of its third quarter Passenger Origin-Destination Survey, due November 15, 1994, as the most recent violation. "Despite repeated requests from the department and replies by Shuttle which promised imminent compliance, Shuttle failed to file its survey report until Jan.

NWT Air of Canada pilots, recording Global Positioning System location data against conventional navigation systems in 737 flights on far-northern routes, confirmed what the carrier expected - GPS is at least as accurate as the aids now being used for en route navigation.

Continental has furloughed 95 skycaps in 10 cities and will contract out its curbside bag checking service to ITS. Elimination of those positions is the final step in airport restructuring plans announced last December to coincide with an 18% reduction in domestic capacity, a Continental spokeswoman said. The cuts are expected to save the airline $20.4 million in 1995 and $52 million in 1996.

The labor union representing Air Inter's flight crews said recent bomb attacks in Paris prove the need to monitor baggage checked on domestic flights closely, Reuter reported. The union has been asking the French Transport Ministry for the past nine months to require systematic surveillance of checked bags on flights within France. A bomb that exploded Thursday in central Paris, near the Arc de Triomphe, was the second in two days.

Steadily expanding ValuJet Airlines is taking on three more DC-9-30 aircraft, which will increase its fleet to 39. The carrier currently operates 31 DC-9s and was expecting delivery of five more by yearend, but one may be delayed until January. The first of the three newly announced aircraft will be delivered this month. Previously operated by Delta, it will be leased on an interim basis from Great Plains Inc., and ValuJet will buy it in September. The other two, formerly operated by Express One International, will be purchased from NSJ Corporation and Express One.
