Two, three and four-way styles are available. The valves can be fabricated from a variety of materials, including stainless and carbon steels. Their full port design results in low pressure drop and high system efficiency. Blowout-proof stems offer reliability and safe operation. High-pressure models use polyamide thrust bearings around the stem.
A relatively new U.S. Air Force squadron here is poised to detect surprise Scud-class missile launches and transmit warnings throughout the Persian Gulf region in a matter of seconds--much faster than was possible during the 1991 gulf war.
European and other non-U.S. defense exporters have not experienced any major setbacks as a result of the financial meltdown in Asia and most harbor the optimistic view that the crisis will be transitory. But despite the marginal effect on existing business, they are seeing a number of contract signing delays and new programs being pushed to the right. ``We don't see many major new programs coming,'' said one aerospace official. ``They now want to rethink their priorities.''

Unrestricted air fares on MetroJet, US Airways' new low-fare airline, will be 57-75% lower on its initial routes than those currently available on the parent airline, the company indicated last week. Unveiling schedules for its first four routes from Baltimore/Washington International Airport, the airline said it would offer a simplified fare structure with just the unrestricted fares, 7-day and 14-day advance purchase fares, and some discounts for seniors, youth and military. There will be no service charge for changes to nonrefundable tickets.
Intelsat's plan to spin off an independent satellite company represents a carefully crafted compromise between free traders who want to completely privatize the international consortium and developing nations that are highly dependent on the organization and opposed to restructuring of any kind.

For more than a decade, engine makers with an eye on the bottom line have wrestled with a significant challenge: how to recoup sufficient returns on their investments in increasingly expensive technologies, while those same technologies prolonged engine component lives and reduced the earnings generated by spare parts sales.
Japan's Defense Agency has received $38.5 billion for its fiscal 1998 budget, including $1.9 billion to buy 48 aircraft. Total procurement is $107 million less than fiscal 1997, which ends Mar. 31, during which 56 aircraft were purchased. The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) F-2 close air support fighter, which has been developed from the Lockheed Martin F-16, dominated the procurement with nearly half of the total budget at $818.4 million.
The largest joint commercial U.S.-Russian space mission ever flown is underway this week to obtain marketable high-resolution/map-quality images of Earth with a Russian spacecraft previously used for Soviet defense mapping operations. The 7-ton Kometa/Spin-2 spacecraft, launched Feb. 17 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, is also the first fully commercial mission successfully launched and operating as part of a race to sell 1-3-meter (3-10-ft.) high-resolution satellite imagery.

The U.S. military is showing considerable interest in a communications antenna that is much smaller and lighter than standard monopole and linear dipole antennas of the same resonant frequency while also offering significantly higher performance. The product is a contrawound toroidal helical antenna (CTHA), which was developed by Emergent Techno- logies Corp. (ETC), a subsidiary of Integral Technologies Inc. of Bridgeport, W. Va., and the West Virginia University Center for Industrial Research Applications.
A fatal midair collision last October between an F-16B and AT-38B after a B-1B bomb-drop test at Edwards AFB, Calif., was caused by the F-16 pilot trying to avoid birds in his flight path, according to investigators. Both the T-38 pilot and his backseat photographer were killed.
The International Assn. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers is offering training to ramp workers and other aviation personnel on the safety implications of routine duties such as hazardous-materials handling, weight and balance determinations and the deicing of airline aircraft. Leaders of the Flight Safety Committee of the Machinists District 141 said airlines train ramp and fleet-service workers on how to perform such tasks, but not necessarily on why that work can be critical to flight safety.

The MegaPlus Model 1.4i digital camera is used to measure air and fluid flows using a technique called velocimetry, which combines high-speed laser pulses with digital imaging technology and computer analysis. Tiny particles are introduced into the flow. Then their change in position is measured over time to determine their velocity. The MegaPlus captures images with a 1,024 X 1,024-pixel, charged coupled device sensor array. NASA has named the shuttle Mission 95 crewmembers who will accompany former astronaut Sen. John Glenn on his mission in October. USAF Lt. Col. Curt Brown, making his fifth shuttle flight, will command the mission. The copilot will be USAF Lt. Col. Steven Lindsey. Brown was 5 years old and Lindsey age 2 when Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth in 1962. The flight will also carry two physician astronauts: NASA mission specialist Dr. Scott Parazynski, an emergency medicine specialist; and Japan's Dr. Chiaki Mukai, a heart surgeon.
Saddam Hussein has been busy. He has 170 presidential facilities--some as large as 25 sq. mi. with 700 buildings--and he has hidden ``dozens of 600-km. missiles and a few 900-km. missiles,'' according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman. ``We feel like he does have them,'' along with thousands of chemical biological weapons, Army Gen. Henry Shelton said. The Pentagon is so confident of its missile claims that the U.S. has dedicated a force, which includes the E-8 Joint-STARS ground surveillance aircraft, to find the mobile missiles if fighting breaks out.
Vandenberg AFB has been busy this month, launching eight satellites on two boosters in an eight-day period. An Orbital Sciences Taurus rocket placed two Orbcomm communications satellites and a Navy ocean-sensing satellite in orbit on Feb. 10, and a Boeing Delta 7920-10 launched five Iridium communications satellites on Feb. 18. Both launches had been delayed for weeks by rain, storms and high upper-level winds at the California facility.
The Transportation Dept. has its work cut out for it. U.S. airlines seeking to take advantage of new flight and code-sharing opportunities to long-restricted Japan have asked for much more than is available under the new bilateral. Applications for new route rights exceed by more than 40% what's available over the four-year agreement, and code-sharing hopefuls are asking for three times that amount. In the flood of paperwork to the department--which promised expedited decisions--the carriers are attacking each other's applications on substantive and procedural grounds.
