Gale C. Andrews has been appointed head of the Boeing Ethics and Business Conduct Office. He was vice president/general auditor. Andrews succeeds Nancy Higgins, who is now vice president-ethics and business conduct for the Lockheed Martin Corp.
The board of directors of MirCorp. has approved plans for continued operation of Mir through 2001. The board okayed the launch of an unmanned Progress resupply spacecraft to the orbital facility this fall, followed by two long-duration manned missions. The first, early next year, will be a several-month flight involving two Russian cosmonauts. Denis Tito, a Santa Monica, Calif., investment manager, will spend about 10 days on the station during the second mission, to be flown by a replacement crew of two Russian cosmonauts in mid-2001.

Aeroflot plans to acquire up to 20 Tupolev Tu-334-200 100-seat aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce BR 715 engines in the next five years. The Russian carrier, which intends to phase out the bulk of its aging fleet of 14 Tu-134s within the next 2-3 years, also has been looking at Airbus A318s and Boeing 717s. But Aeroflot, which is expanding domestic operations, said the high cost of operating Western-built aircraft is a problem.

Regional military tensions have prompted Asian Aerospace Pty. Ltd., best known for staging the biennial Singapore air show, to plan a new conference, called C4I Asia 2001, to be held in Singapore Feb. 28-Mar. 2. It will be the first exhibition in Asia devoted to command, control, communications, computers and intelligence, according to conference organizers.

Israeli officials are pondering their next move after the Turkish government unexpectedly reopened the bidding in a competition for surveilliance satellites that Israel thought it had won. Turkey chose Israel Aircraft Industries' $274-million bid to provide and launch Ofeq-type satellites with better than 1-meter resolution. All that was left was to draft and sign the contract. But after the fact, France's Alcatel came back to Turkey with a lower bid.

Strong sales and improved production efficiencies at its Gulfstream ultra-long-haul business jet unit helped lift General Dynamics' second-quarter earnings and sales. Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics last week reported second-quarter sales of $2.6 billion with net earnings of $204 million. For the first six months of the year, the company logged $5.2 billion in sales and $388 million in net earnings. That compares with $4.1 billion and $333 million, respectively, during the same period last year.
The new release of the flight planning and moving map programs provides enhanced weather graphics viewing capabilities. Weather graphics from DTC DUATS, such as NexRad and U.S. Satellite graphics, can be overlaid on the Chart View. Users can physically manipulate the route around known weather on the map screen. Metar information is available on a new tab within the Airport Info dialogue and can be printed with other airport information.

The Intelligent Systems and Robotics Center at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., has developed a prototype autonomous standoff mine to destroy enemy armor. Called Fire Ant, it is slightly larger than a child's remote-control toy automobile. The Fire Ant is teleoperated to an observation point and then uses its automatic target recognition system to detect, track and fire on enemy armored vehicles, according to technical contact Keith Williams. The latest versions use explosively formed projectiles and are not destroyed when they fire.

The Model HV has been configured for high-volume sensor applications. The unit is offered in 10 pressure ranges of 0-25 to 0-10,000 psig, and provides a high-level 4-20 mA or 1-5 VDC output. Four electrical connections and optional pressure port adaptors are available for exceptional flexibility and application-specific functionality. The HV endures overpressures up to 2x (F.S.) and has a rated operating temperature from -40F to 185F. On-board electronics minimize signal degradation over distance and are CE approved and EMI/RFI protected.
Air Line Pilots Assn. units at two Delta Connection carriers have mounted a strong challenge to the national ALPA organization with a petition that seeks to abolish the two-tier system which traditionally has divided regional and mainline pilots.
Mocap has developed the waste minimizer system used in the manufacturing of custom, rubber injection-molded components. The proprietary system eliminates most runner scrap and improves cycle times. The company states that by cutting waste material up to 70%, costs are dramatically reduced. Mocap customers could benefit from the enhanced material properties of standard formulations such as EPDM and silicone, but at costs associated with thermoplastic rubbers. No extra tooling costs are incurred over traditional rubber injection molds.
The lift fan for the vertical-landing version of Lockheed Martin's Joint Strike Fighter has suffered another breakdown, but company officials say they were aware of a weakness in the system and had a redesigned part ready for replacement. Despite industry rumors of pressures on Lockheed Martin to redesign the systems, program officials resumed testing on the lift fan design on July 18 with only about 1 hr. of formal testing lost to the incident. Other recent lift fan problems have involved a misalignment in the gearbox and an overheating bearing.
