It may be useful to examine some of the causes of fatal aircraft accidents, as these disasters are attributed to human error about 80% of the time. Just as speed is a hazard in road transportation, the loading of an aircraft is a vital factor in airline operations. While airlines offer speed, comfort and safety on their flights, they should develop an awareness among travelers to restrict their baggage to reasonable proportions.
Japan Airlines, which plans to cut 6,000 jobs, is thinking about eliminating a further 3,000, representing 6% of its payroll. The new round of reductions would apply to ground staff and, if implemented, would be achieved with a hiring freeze and voluntary redundancies, says the airline.
People with insight into the Pentagon's Fiscal 2008 supplemental budgets say they contain defense technology funds that may be challenged because they aren't for direct Iraq-war replacements. But the allocation replaces funding for key weapon improvements that were stripped out of earlier, approved budgets to pay for combat operations. Two technologies are of particular future operational value--advanced situational awareness and electronic attack.

Thad Beier seems to have missed the fact that the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 are aimed at two almost entirely different markets (AW&ST Dec. 4, 2006, p. 6). The A380 is a natural successor to the Boeing 747, as flagship airliners grow to keep pace with the inevitable demand for bigger aircraft to cope with burgeoning traffic. The 787 will show innovative technology, specifically that the extensive use of composites can offer substantial advantages in airframe strength and weight reduction.
