The Navy’s decision to base its next nuclear-powered aircraft carrier at Mayport Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla., has touched off a war of words that the new administration may have to weigh in on. The Navy says its decision “reduces risks to fleet resources in the event of natural disaster, man-made calamity or attack by foreign nations or terrorists.” The location also provides the advantages of fleet dispersal and survivability without affecting operational availability, which the Navy says it has encountered in the past on the West Coast. But Sen.

Military transport aircraft demand is projected to remain stable through 2017 as air forces worldwide are looking to replace aging aircraft and expand their capabilities. The U.S. military continues to acquire several transport types as part of ongoing recapitalization, and Western Europe is emerging as a major customer for transports as its nations face a need to support security missions in distant regions.

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne has completed a third series of throttling tests on the Common Extensible Cryogenic Engine (CECE), concept hardware that may lead to the engine used to lower the planned Altair lander to the surface of the Moon. The latest CECE test article used a new injector design and propellant feed systems to eliminate potentially dangerous engine chugging by better controlling the flow of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to the combustion chamber.
