When the subject of Airbus in Alabama surfaces, most think of the A320 Final Assembly Line (FAL) at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley or the nearby Engineering Center. Yet Airbus Defense and Space has been in Mobile longer than either one.

The company, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary there, selected Mobile Regional Airport-based Airbus DS Military Aircraft Inc. as its worldwide support center for the U.S. military’s C212 transport aircraft. It offers MRO services, component repair, extensive material services, engineering and technical support for American operators of the C212 and larger CN235 tactical transports. The Mobile operation is also a certified FAA and European Aviation Safety Agency repair station.

The component repair facility, which will augment the existing facility, is aimed at improving service for the company's medium and light multi-mission aircraft operators. New offerings include hydraulic, avionics, composite and structural repairs, painting, component exchange and engineering support.

Last year, the company opened a new 7,500-square-foot component repair facility, expanding the existing 30,000-square-foot MRO delivery center that opened at Mobile Regional Airport in 2009 and could be used to support aspects of the A320 manufacturing facility that is nearing completion at Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley. The Regional Airport is west of the Aeroplex, located at the Mobile Downtown Airport, which also is home to the Airbus Engineering Center along with VT MAE, Star Aviation, Continental Motors, MAAS Aviation and other companies.
