Return of the MAX

November 24

11:00 EST / 16:00 GMT

The FAA’s approval for the Boeing 737 MAX to fly again ends a long, dark chapter in the evolving story of how the aircraft’s saga is changing aviation safety. But key questions remain. How long will it take for airlines to get grounded and undelivered aircraft back into service? What kind of pilot training is required? What are the long-term implications for the FAA and other regulatory agencies? And how vital is the MAX to Boeing’s financial recovery?

Special guest Rob Spingarn, the global head of Aerospace/Defense Equity Research at Credit Suisse, joins Aviation Week editors to answer those questions and more.

DATE: November 23

TIME: 11:00am EST / 16:00 GMT

DURATION: 30 minutes

Arjan Meijer was promoted to President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation in June, having been Chief Commercial Officer since 2017. He takes the helm at a critical time of change for the industry and for Embraer, which until the pandemic struck had been on course to be integrated with Boeing until that deal was canceled. But with the global air transport industry shrinking, more airlines will be looking to smaller aircraft—a potential opportunity for the E-Jet and maybe a good time to consider launching a new turboprop, as hinted at by Meijer. How will this Brazilian OEM steer through changing airline needs?

Fireside Chat with IATA's Medical Advisor Dr. David Powell

16:00 EDT, August 20 | 06:00 AEST, August 21

Airlines are faced with the task of educating passengers that it is safe to fly and that the measures they are taking ensure virus transmission risk is minimized throughout the air travel journey. Airlines are following ICAO guidelines, using hospital-quality HEPA filters in cabins, conducting extra anti-bacterial cleanings between flights and altering their in-flight offerings. Through a medical and scientific perspective, Dr. David Powell, IATA’s Chief Medical Officer, will explain why it is safe for passengers and crews to fly in a virus pandemic and provide evidence that supports why the transmission numbers aboard planes are so low.

Dr. Powell joined IATA in his current role in 2018, though he has been providing expert medical advice to the aviation industry for over a decade. He is a former Medical Officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force with previous airline posts, including Chief Medical Officer at Air New Zealand and Group Medical Officer at Virgin Australia.

Join Aviation Week Network as Dr. Powell highlights the current health precautions being taken by the entire industry to ensure pilots, flight attendants and passengers stay healthy and feel safe flying again.

Democratization of Business Aviation

July 27

15:00 EDT | 20:00 BST | 21:00 CEST

The cost of entry to business aircraft cabins has decreased through a variety of devices including travel clubs, jet cards, empty leg apps, by-the-seat scheduled charter, whole charter and fractional aircraft networks. What other arrangements are coming and how low can the price go? How successful have these appeals actually been in expanding the customer base?

What if China Shuts Off Access to Airbus or Boeing?

July 23

10:00 EDT / 15:00 BST / 16:00 CEST

In 2001 China accounted for 2% of commercial aircraft orders. By 2018 that had risen to 23%, and Chinese demand was a key driver of growth at Airbus, Boeing and western aviation suppliers. But as the Comac C919’s availability draws closer, could a deterioration of relations between Beijing and the West prompt China’s authoritarian leaders to curtail aircraft imports? And how long would it take Airbus and Boeing to recover from a big decline in Chinese sales?

Teal Group Vice President Richard Aboulafia joins Aviation Week editors to discuss the scary scenarios.

Combat Aircraft of the Future

July 16

10:00 EDT / 15:00 BST / 16:00 CEST

The U.S., Europe and the UK are chasing future combat aircraft platforms, but the sixth generation may be so much more than a modernized airframe, placing a heavy emphasis on autonomy and artificial intelligence. Along with sixth-generation fighter programs such as the U.S.’s Next Generation Air Dominance, the Franco-German Future Combat Air System and the UK’s Team Tempest, those nations are also pursuing unmanned platforms with intriguing names – Skyborg, Lanca and Mosquito.

While many of these efforts remain highly classified, Aviation Week editors are piecing together the latest clues to their development.

Electrification: Dead End or the Future of Aviation?

July 10

10:00 EDT / 15:00 BST / 16:00 CEST

COVID-19 could prove to be the making or the breaking of the electrification of electric propulsion. Will the major industry players keep funding research? Business Aviation | Insurance at a Premium

July 1, 2020

The cost of coverage is doubling in some cases – if available at all. Why? Substantial losses in commercial and private aviation along with natural catastrophes. As a result, some underwriters have left the market altogether while those who remain are upping rates to recover from years of flat returns and are choosing policyholders carefully. Older pilots and those flying their own turbine-powered aircraft are finding the market particularly tough.

Illicit Charter: Intentional or Not

June 16

Many expect post-pandemic interest in business aviation to increase as a result of reduced airline service and health concerns related to airline travel. While there are a number of options available to those new to business aviation – charter, jet cards, fractionals, etc. – there are other ways to go aloft, such as paying an aircraft owner to try out the travel option with his aircraft and crew or a private pilot for a quick day trip to a business meeting. The problem is those latter options violate federal regulations risking fines and license suspension and void insurance coverage should an accident result.

Capitalizing on Business Aviation in the Post-Pandemic Era

May 21

The mobility benefits of business aviation have never been clearer as they are today. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused airlines to ground large portions of their fleets, slash the number of departures, and concentrate traffic at hub airports thereby adding more legs to trips and even cancel service altogether to some cities.

Business aviation, in contrast, continues to offer passengers non-stop, point-to-point air transportation and also provides lower disease exposure risk. However, operating your company aircraft isn’t the only way to gain access to business aviation.

How can business aviation become more accessible and less expensive? Will FBOs be able to maintain health-safety standards and complete a timely boarding process?

Join us for an interactive webinar as our panelists discuss these topics and more.

Air Transport & COVID-19: Global Alliances and Airline Partnerships in the New Era

May 19

How will airline partnerships adapt to the momentous changes in the global air transport industry? When the Star Alliance formed in 1997, it began a huge shift in how airlines expanded their networks and engaged with customers, especially frequent flyers. Oneworld and then SkyTeam soon followed, establishing three global alliances that collectively represented the majority of flagship carriers. They rapidly expanded, providing cross benefits to passengers that encourage them to stay within their chosen alliance.

Will the industry crisis mean fewer alliance airline members and how will any network gaps be addressed?

How are the alliances supporting their airline members and maintaining frequent flyer engagement?

How will market distortions from government aid and government ownership of some airlines affect alliances and equity partnerships?

Join Aviation Week Network as we raise these questions and more with the leaders of two major global alliances.

How COVID-19 Is Affecting Top Defense Aircraft Programs

May 14

09:30 EDT / 14:30 BST / 21:30 SGT

Despite defense manufacturing being considered “essential” work during the coronavirus crisis in the U.S., UK and elsewhere, factories around the world have faced work stoppages and slowdowns. That leaves countries counting on the delivery of new aircraft waiting. In some cases, such as a delay to deliveries of the Boeing KC-46 tanker, might be welcome news, but in India – which has already been watching its fighter fleet dwindle – slower deliveries of Dassault Rafales will hurt.

 - How might COVID change the military aircraft market now and in the future?

 - Which programs are likely to experience production slowdowns that last?

 - Which fleets the will be hit the hardest?

Join Aviation Week Network and industry analysts while we look at how the market for high-profile military aircraft programs has changed since the arrival of COVID-19.

Sustainability in the Era of COVID-19

May 7

The aviation industry’s efforts to improve sustainability have been put on the back burner as the COVID-19 crisis has forced airlines and commercial aircraft manufacturers to focus on survivability. How will the crisis set back electric propulsion and other efforts to lower aviation’s contribution to climate change? Will accelerated retirements of older, less efficient aircraft help offset those delays? And should governments be mandating cleaner and quieter airplanes in exchange for billions of dollars in economic aid to the industry?

Industry experts from Airlines for America and the International Council on Clean Transportation join Aviation Week editors to discuss what aviation leaders should be thinking about now to be positioned for a greener future when the industry recovers.
