Asia-Pacific Connectivity Gets Boost As Panasonic XTS Satellite Goes Live | パナソニック製XTS衛星運用開始で、アジア太平洋地域の機内インターネット性能が拡大

来月から、新たな超高スループット衛星（eXtreme high Throughput Satellite：XTS） ・APSTAR-6Dの運用が始まり、アジア太平洋地域における機内インターネット接続性が大きく拡大することが期待されている。 

この衛星はAPSATCOM社とPanasonic Avionics社が共同開発したもので、東京・ソウル・北京・上海・香港・マレーシア・シンガポール・インドネシアといった高需要路線において、XTSスポットビームを用いたKuバンド帯での数Ghzの通信能力を提供する。

Panasonic Avionics社は、同社の機内インターネットシステムが搭載されている2,544機に対し、Gen-3ネットワークに対応させるアップグレードを来月中には完了させる。また、新たに1,000機以上の民間機に同システムが搭載させる予定で、こちらは当初からGen-3ネットワークに対応する。

Panasonic Avionics社のCEO・Ken Sain氏は、同社の第3世代通信ネットワークは「超高スループット容量を柔軟に活用し、将来にわたって費用対効果と信頼性が高い高帯域サービスを顧客に提供する」と語った。

同社によると、現在Gen-3ネットワークの高データレート性能を検証するための実証試験を航空会社と共に実施中だ。また、APSTAR-6Dを利用できるエリアを飛行する乗客は、XTSがもたらす高い接続性により、高帯域を必要とするスマートフォンアプリを機内で利用できるようになると同社は考えている。

すでに800機の航空機を保有する21のアジア系航空会社が同社製の機内インターネットシステムを選択している。この中には、厦門航空・エバー航空・海南航空・ガルーダインドネシア航空・キャセイパシフィック航空・シンガポール航空・全日空・タイ航空・チャイナエアライン・中国国際航空・中国東方航空・中国南方航空・日本航空・香港航空といった、地域内の主要航空会社の多くが含まれている。

Inflight connectivity over the Asia-Pacific region is set to get a boost as a new extreme high throughput satellite (XTS)—APSTAR-6D—enters service over the next month. 

The satellite is jointly designed by APSATCOM and Panasonic Avionics, and will provide airlines with multiple gigahertz of new Ku-band capacity over China and high-density routes around East Asia, including Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, using narrow XTS spot beams. 

Panasonic Avionics is set to complete the upgrade of the 2,544 aircraft installed with its connectivity service to its Gen-3 network within the next month. Over 1,000 commercial aircraft are committed to being installed with its connectivity services and linked to the Gen-3 network from the outset.

Panasonic Avionics CEO Ken Sain said the company’s third-generation communications network “delivers the targeted, flexible use of extreme high throughput capacity, ensuring we can meet the needs of our airline customers with cost-effective and reliable high bandwidth services well into the future.”

Panasonic Avionics said it is currently engaged in active and ongoing trials with airlines to demonstrate the high data rate capabilities of its Gen-3 network. The company expects that airline passengers flying in the region served by APSTAR-6D will also take advantage of the enhanced connectivity that XTS delivers to use high-bandwidth apps in flight.

According to the company, 21 Asian carriers, representing over 800 aircraft, have already selected Panasonic Avionics for inflight connectivity, including many of the region’s leading airlines, such as Air China, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, EVA Air, Garuda Indonesia, Hainan Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Xiamen Airlines.
