新型コロナウィルスのパンデミックが発生した際、機材の退役が急激に進むと多くが予想したが、それは実際には起きなかった。 

その理由は、多くのオペレーターが需要が急回復した際に対応できるよう、ある程度の機材を保有し続けており、退役の判断については様子見の姿勢を取っているからだ。

パンデミック初期には退役が加速し、2020年3月の急激な増加をもたらした。従来は、そこから年末にかけてより多くの機材が退役していくが、そうはならなかった。

Many predicted a huge spike in aircraft retirements when COVID-19 hit. But that didn’t happen. 

This is because many operators are taking a wait-and-see position before they remove aircraft from their books, lest they be caught without enough lift to support a sudden bounce-back in demand.
 

Retirements were accelerated at the start of the pandemic, causing an initial spike in retirements in March 2020. Traditionally, more aircraft were retired towards the end of the year.
